Problem: The cost of government is excessive. All Americans, whether poor or rich, are income taxed, charged fees, licensing costs, permit costs, sales taxed and excise taxed at a level that takes about fifty (50%) percent of their income. This problem forces families to have two incomes just to survive. Cause: The Republicans and Democrats, under the pretext of helping people, propose laws and programs that are supposed to fix some problem. When the problem is not fixed, more laws, programs and bureaucrats are the proposed solution. Unfortunately, the problem is never fixed and government continues to grow. The Republicans and Democrats increase the required taxes to support those programs. http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxfreedomday/ Solution: The solution is for federal government to decrease in scope and cost. The proper role of the federal government is to handle foreign affairs, interstate commerce and provide for a strong national defense. Most areas of life should be handled by state and/or local laws and politicians. The federal government could be funded by a graduated income tax from 0 to 10% on income from $0 to $100,000. Rate increases of 1% would apply every $10,000. Income < $10,000 is 0%, 10K is 1%, 20K is 2%, etc. Income above $100K will be a flat 10%. There will be no deductions, no tax credits, no exemptions and a tax return would filed on one page. The complexity of the tax return is a prime example of government trying make taxes better (and raise revenue), while they continue to get worse and special interest get special favors.
